Wade’s 2018 NOT to-do list

I was listening to a Craig Groeschel sermon podcast last week and he asked the question, “What are you ALWAYS doing?” “What would others say you are always doing?” I thought this would be a great question to ask my daughters over dinner. Lily and Hayden, fill in the blank, “Daddy is always________.” Unfortunately, I was not surprised by their answer. They responded in as much unison as 4 & 7 year old daughters can, “Daddy is always working.”

Then a few days ago, I ran across this great idea for a “NOT to do” list at www.seniorpastorcentral.com. And the idea was born. In response to my daughters response and my own perceived shortcomings from 2017, here’s my 2018 “NOT to do” list:

  1. I will not fail to take two full days off each week. All work and no play makes Wade a dull boy. I will take time each week to relax my body and renew my soul.
  2. I will not neglect my physical and emotional well-being by failing to to engage in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 6 days a week. I have worked too hard to lose a significant amount of weight only to gain it back. Too, I know that there are many benefits that accompany physical exercise all of which I find desirable.
  3. I will not allow others’ agenda to push my use of my time. I have a set of priorities based on our church's mission and my calling. In order to focus on the most important things like preaching, sermon and worship preparation, leader development, and the like, I must delegate other ministry priorities.
  4. I will not neglect developing people in leadership positions around me. I will meet regularly with staff and volunteers in order to develop their skills, establish priorities, and evaluate progress toward goals.
  5. I will not keep saying, “I want to write a blog and a book.” I will write a weekly blog published each Friday.
  6. I will not allow the constant demands of ministry to encroach on my time with my family. In January 2019, my children will answer the question What is Daddy ALWAYS doing? differently.

What is your NOT to do list this year?
